Flat Reach Strap Tutorial for Baby Carrier

BCIA (Baby Carrier Industry Alliance) is recommending that reach straps for baby carrier hoods be no longer than 8″

These finished are right around 7 inches long when snapped onto the hood.

  • 2 pieces of your choice fabric 2×9 inches
  • Safety pin (for turning)
  • Snaps
  • Snap pliers
  • Ruler
  • Cutting Mat
  • Sewing Machine

First, cut out your pieces. You’ll need 2 cut 2 x 9 inches.

Fold in half and pin.

Sew along the 9 inch edge ONLY. You will be making a tube so that you can turn your work.

Insert the safety pin into the unsewed edge.

Take the head of the pin and push down inside the tube you just made.

Use the head of the pin to work the tail inside of the tube. Once it bunches like shown above, work the ends inside and keep moving the pin down.

Pull all the way through and start folding under the ends to make nice corners. Take your time with this, especially if it’s wrap fabric. It seems to be more difficult.

Now iron!

Topstitch all around. I like mine really close to the edge.

Add snaps! You could also use velcro if you don’t have a snap press.

Attach to your Tula hood and enjoy!!

You may make these items for personal use. If you make to sell using my patterns, I only ask that you disclose and link the free pattern. Thank you!
